Common Core Standards

For the first time in the nation’s history, the United States has released a common set of national standards (adopted by 46 states) with a singular focus on getting all of America’s students prepared to succeed in college and/or their careers.

The key skills articulated in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts are essential tools required for students to be functionally literate, but they go beyond basic reading and writing skills to include critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis. These standards are shaping education in the United States. Linking environmental education and the Common Core Standards is essential.

Thankfully, the Kentucky Environmental Education Council has developed a crosswalk that shows the connections between the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12).

Next Generation Science Standards

A  first draft of the Next Generation Science Standards has been released. We anticipate the a second public draft will be available for comment in Nov-Dec 2012.  Once the NGSS are finalized, we will create a crosswalk showing the connections with Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12).

In the meantime, Scott Carley has created a graphic that shows the connections between the NGSS framework and various standards/principles, including Excellence in Environmental Education: Guidelines for Learning (K-12):
