It is with excitement, gratitude and relief that I announce that Maine has a Department of Education-approved Environmental Literacy Plan for public K-12 education. You are among the first to hear this great news. We will be announcing to all of our friends and colleagues and supporters in the coming days.

Thank you to the Ferguson Foundation and Maine Environmental Education Association for their financial support. The hard work of Anita Bernhardt at the Department of Education as well as the strong partnership of the Department of Conservation, Maine Audubon and the Maine Environmental Education Association allowed us to reach this incredible goal. Over 400 Mainers contributed to this ELP. There has never been a plan for Maine Public Schools to work toward creating environmentally literate citizens...until now!

The ELP is attached and can be found on the Maine Audubon website: http://www.maineaudubon.org/explore/EnvironmentalLiteracy.shtml (right column) and the Department of Education's website:  http://www.maine.gov/education/lres/scitech/links.html

Thank you all for your support. This is a huge accomplishment for Maine's future.

With appreciation,

Kara

Kara Wooldrik, Director of Education, Maine Audubon
