The Audubon Center at Debs Park is part of a national network of nature centers developed by National Audubon Society to reach underserved communities. The Center operates under the aegis of Audubon California, a state field program of National Audubon Society, and is a vital part of Audubon's national outreach initiative targeting Latino audiences. At Debs Park, our mission is to inspire people to experience, understand and care for the local natural world by providing nature-based programs designed to engage low-income urban families in the outdoor world, and making environmental issues relevant to their lives. We use environmental education to create diverse new young leaders actively engaged in conservation in northeast Los Angeles. The Center is located in a park-poor, inner-city area marked by a lack of access to green open spaces. The Audubon Center offers standards-based educational programs in partnership with local schools that encourage curiosity and critical thinking, and inspire a greater interest in science and nature. Our suite of free bilingual community programs contribute to the overall health and well-being of our neighborhood by delivering the rich experiences that come with healthy outdoor recreation and a connection with the natural world.
The Teacher Naturalist will assist with the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of all aspects of dynamic, interactive educational programming for primary and secondary school groups who visit the Audubon Center at Debs Park. A large part of this position will focus on working with the Arroyo Green Team, our program for teens, on conservation projects in the park. This position will oversee and facilitate our spring and summer day camp programs, including managing interns. This position is also responsible for assisting with outreach to the local community.
