Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in South Texas

June 2011 through September 2011

 

 

Enjoy coastal south Texas – beach, sea turtles, fishing, dolphins, kayaking and birds – while gaining experience at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.  We are seeking an intern with strong coastal ecology and people skills to assist with our visitor services program.  Greet and orient visitors at the visitor center, assist with interpretive kayak tours on Laguna Madre bay, participate in community outreach events, summer camp tours, interpretive programs and maintaining Refuge trails and grounds.  Additional duties will include:  selling Refuge passes and bookstore items; answering phones and taking reservations.

 

Requirements

Kayaking experience preferred.  Passion to inspire others to conserve wildlife and habitat.  Teaching/public speaking skills working with children through seniors. Ability to work with people of multi-cultural backgrounds. Must be able to work in hot/humid conditions, and lift 80 lbs.  You must have your own dependable vehicle and valid driver’s license.  Preference given to candidates with a BS degree in a related field.

 

Work Conditions

Day conditions can involve high temperatures (90-100°F), humidity, and intense sunlight in remote areas as well as thorns, chiggers, and ticks.  Interns will serve 40 hours per week and will work weekends, holidays, and some nights.  Work will be performed both inside and outside.

 

Benefits

Interns will receive a living allowance stipend in addition to free furnished housing, utilities (water, electricity, gas, sewage) and laundry facilities. Housing will be located at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, just 18 miles from South Padre Island, and will include shared sleeping quarters with no more than 2 persons per room, communal kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities.  No pets are allowed.
