Special Plant
Population Intern (Position Code: 13659)
http://www.thesca.org/node/171558
To prevent and reduce poaching events, you will assist the resource
management staff and coordinate with the ranger staff, with surveying and
mapping populations most at risk, patrolling ginseng and goldenseal
populations during the harvest season, installing remote sensors,
monitoring of plant populations, proactively marking roots in the field
with traceable dye, and assisting with the processing of poached roots. You
will also establish contact with dealers to discourage the buying of marked
roots and to report potential sellers of poached roots to Law Enforcement.
To propagate ginseng plants, seeds will be gathered, and will be germinated
at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, Clermont, Kentucky. Once viable,
seedlings will be returned and planted in Mammoth Cave National Park. This
project will also identify major goldenseal populations in the park, and
will begin a similar propagation program for goldenseal.
