Seasonal Children’s Garden Assistant--Spring

Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is seeking a Seasonal Children’s Garden Assistant who will assist the Children’s Garden Coordinator with the implementation of gardening programs for children ages 2-13.  Works with Coordinator to assist with the following:  curriculum development, supervision of seasonal instructors and teen apprentices, and horticultural maintenance.  Leads young child/caregiver gardening program two mornings per week in the spring and fall.

Responsibilities and Duties:  Assist the Children’s Garden Coordinator in the implementation of the Children’s Garden programs.   Mentor seasonal instructors in lesson plan development and behavior management.  Support instructors in their mentoring of teen apprentices-assistant teachers assigned to each program from BBG’s Garden Apprentice Program. Communicate with participants’ families/caregivers. Manage program supplies and plants. Direct teaching as a Trees and Saplings Instructor on Wednesday and Thursday mornings and as a substitute instructor as needed.

 

Duration and hours: February 15-June 2, 2012; Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 8:30am-4pm; Friday 11am-6:30pm; 

 

Compensation: $17.00/hour

 

Qualifications: BA or BS degree in education, environmental education, museum studies, agriculture, botany, biology or related field. Direct experience working with children and gardening required.
