High School Conservation Crew Leaders

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is seeking experienced, quality oriented outdoor leaders to supervise teams of six or eight high school students from across the US. The leaders work in pairs, equally responsible for the daily management and supervision of the crew in either a backcountry or frontcountry site. Each leader will assist their co-leader in managing student and group safety and development, cooking, camp life, and work project management. They will be expected to represent SCA on-site and coordinate with agency partner on designated project(s). These are residential programs, and leaders are expected to remain with the crew for the duration of the program. Program dates vary from two weeks to 35 days long, depending on location. Programs are located nationwide in National Parks and Forests, as well as other conserved lands. These are full-time, seasonal positions.

Primary Responsibilities:

Crew Manager

Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics

Oversee crew operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, health & wellness of members

Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment

Plan for and carry out Environmental Education lessons

Organize and lead recreation trip after completion of work project (typically backpacking, hiking, canoeing, or sightseeing).

Technical Advisor

Supervise the skills training & safe tool use of crew members

Manage the quality & technique of work performed

Promote leadership development within team

Partnership Representative

Manage relationship with agency partner

Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics

Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator

Communicate with SCA field support staff as required

Complete required program reporting and documentation

Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project

Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Program Dates:

Note: New Crew Leaders must attend one session of the Orientation and Conservation Skills trainings.

Training Dates:

May 17 – May 26, 2012

May 31 – June 9, 2012

June 21 – June 30, 2012

High School Crew Dates:

Track 1: June 18th –July 17th

Track 2: July 6th – August 4th

Track 3: July 23th – August 21th

*Please Note:

  • Leaders can lead multiple crews in one season
  • Programs can vary in length of service from these specific dates

Compensation:

Salary based on skills and experience, certifications, and number of days in the field with students. Starting salary for a 30-day crew is $2,250.

$500 travel reimbursement to Crew Leader Orientation & Conservation Skills Training

$500 travel reimbursement to program location

Medical coverage, food and group gear provided while on program

Qualifications:

Must be at least 21 years old.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Must be in good physical condition, ability to lift 50+ lbs.

Must pass a criminal background check and motor vehicle report.

Experience working with Youth/Young Adult Programming

Experience teaching or working in an outdoor leadership role - Experience working in an informal or formal educational environment.

Experience with outdoor living skills, including: hiking, safety awareness, LNT, camping, cooking, basic map/compass skills, etc.

Experience in conservation service project management, service learning, conservation, or trail/conservation projects and hand tool use. May also include experience with carpentry, landscaping, gardening, etc.

Must possess one of the following Medical Certifications: Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Advanced First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, or Wilderness EMT certification before Crew Leader Orientation.
