Plans, assigns, and oversees the management activities of nature preserve management staff (Stewardship Assistant and Preserve Management Worker) and volunteers.  Coordinates the implementation of preserve management plan objectives such as exotic species control, prescribed fire, wetland restoration, construction of trails and fire breaks, vegetation management, and rare species monitoring.  Develops management plans for all preserves in region.  Inspects assigned preserves on a regular basis.  Evaluates potential acquisitions for management concerns and hazardous wastes. Conducts prescribed burns and writes burn plans.  Trains staff on preserve management techniques, use of equipment, herbicides, and personal safety.  Uses hand tools and power equipment such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, and weed/brush cutters.  Seeks grant opportunities, prepares and submits grant applications to support work in assigned region.  Makes presentations to school and civic groups.  Develops interpretive trails and brochures, species lists, etc.  Leads interpretive hikes.  Works with local school systems to promote outdoor education on nature preserves in region.  Recruits volunteers to augment regional stewardship efforts.  Keeps daily records and maintains and repairs assigned equipment.  Operates and maintains motor vehicles including tractors and all terrain vehicles.  Prepares monthly and annual reports documenting research and management activities.  Assists visiting researchers with projects.  Communicates and coordinates with managing agents, private and public agencies owning dedicated preserves, law enforcement, fire, and local officials for their assistance in monitoring activities on preserves and natural areas.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural or physical science, i.e. biology, ecology, environmental science, conservation, or a closely related field.  Must have at least three years of professional field experience in natural areas management, nature preserve management, wilderness management or a related natural resource field, including experience in rare species management and habitat restoration.  Must possess a valid driver’s license.                                                                                       

* Position is for the Eastern Regional Preserve Manager.  The position will be based in Frankfort, KY.

 

* Familiarity with natural communities, rare species of Kentucky.

 

* Position is responsible for implementing KSNPC's burn program in the western region.  Previous training, experience in planning and conducting prescribed fires is strongly desired.

 

* Must be willing to work long hours and some weekends, and to travel throughout Kentucky

 

* Must be able to carry a heavy load over uneven terrain.

 

SALARY: Grade 13 Minimum: $2670.20 /month; Mid point is $3554.70/month
