Summary: Director of Interpretation
Natural History Museum
Location: Los Angeles County, CA

Director of Interpretation: The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks a creative, energetic and seasoned individual to take on this new position as a member of the leadership team in the newly formed Education and Exhibits division.  Reporting to the Vice President of Education and Exhibits, the Director of Interpretation is responsible for the development of interpretive content throughout the Museum. Located in Exposition Park, the Museum, which will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2013, will have 258,000 square feet of renovated, restored and redesigned space. This “new” Museum will be visitor-focused. The demographic of Museum visitors reflects the diversity of Los Angeles. Audiences are younger and more likely to have been born outside of the US. Content, therefore, needs to be developed so that it is accessible to the widest range of visitors and focuses on authentic, substantive and relevant educational experiences for them. The new Director must have expertise in the sciences or science education or in a cultural discipline and cultural interpretation. S/he must be able to work effectively with curators to make scientific concepts understandable. S/he must be an effective manager and team player who can work in a dynamic and collaborative environment. Additionally, s/he must have 5-7 years directing interpretive programs, know how to manage budgets, and must be conversant with current technologies.
